Challenges addressed by the pilots
- Knowledge gap regarding planning, construction, deconstruction and logistics in circular projects. Not enough methods and examples are documented and shown.
- Change in mindset is needed, to be open to “new”, different methods but also results. Overcoming this requires new design thinking and an appreciation of the aesthetics of reuse.
- Supply and demand not matched: materials and components up for reuse exist, but processes for finding, storing, and distributing them are underdeveloped.
Task within the project
The main task is to develop and test practical methods for circular construction in the South Baltic region. Our goal and task are to demonstrate how the principles and findings of our project can be done practically, with concrete concepts and examples. With these target groups from various areas within the building sector will be presented with multipliable solutions in several phases within the building and material life cycle.
Why these pilots and what is their added value for the FutureBalticBauhaus?
The pilots have been carefully selected to demonstrate solutions in three separate building and material phases:
- DEMOLITION, and how it can be practiced gently once a building has reached its End of Life to offer materials and components up for reusing. (Holbaek Municipality)
- LOGISTICS: Locating, storing and distributing materials and components up for reuse. (Kalmar Municipality)
- PLANNING and building with reused materials and components - planning phase. (Hochschule Wismar)
Generally, the pilots will show and test methods for making the reuse of materials possible. They will be handled by the individual partners associated to them. Parallel to this, there will be constant sharing of our progress, to make learning from each other's pilots possible. The pilots will take regional building culture into account, complement each other and have the possibility of being scaled up.
The outputs of the pilots will be studied and monitored where possible. The project will gain from the documentation of these experiences. These will offer a new view to the project, from a practical angle. With the pilot projects we will be able to reach out to more target groups, and present best-practice examples.
