The objective of the Wismar pilot project is to test and demonstrate how reused materials and components can be applied in a “Second Life Workshop” prototype. The pilot will explore the influence of the reuse strategy on both the design and construction phases, with an emphasis on developing methods that can serve as guidance for relevant target groups to support more circular building practices in the future.
Beyond methodology, the pilot also investigates how working with reused materials impacts aesthetics and design outcomes, and how it can shift mindsets in architecture and construction. As with any architectural project, compliance with energy performance targets, safety regulations, and building codes remains essential. However, the pilot also seeks to explore the potential offered by the German “E-standard” (Experimental Building Type), which is particularly relevant for innovative concepts like this.
