In Wismar we have been busy in the laboratories of the Engineering Faculty of the University of Applied Sciences, together with architecture students from our course “No time to WASTE – Re_sourcing architecture in action”. Diverse bricks taken from a demolished building in Holbaek have been tested, under the valuable guidance of several laboratory experts and lecturers from the Engineering faculty in Wismar as well as the Kompetenzzentrum Bau Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (KBauMV), an associated partner of the FutureBalticBauhaus project.
Testing Confirms Bricks Are Fit for Reuse
After calculating their density, we tested the moisture absorption and compressive strength of the bricks. As a rule, all tests complied with the relevant DIN (EN) norms. Though the results differ considerably for the different bricks, overall, they are much better than anticipated and the bricks ready for a second life cycle.
