Visit to a demolition company in Roskilde highlights growing demand for reused building materials and the role of circular construction.

On 17 March, Holbæk Municipality and NEG visited the demolition company LH Hockerup in Roskilde as part of the Interreg South Baltic project “Circular South Baltic”.

The company has worked with reused building materials since the 1970s, but demand declined during the construction boom around 2011–2012, leading to a temporary halt in sales to private customers. Today, sales have resumed as demand for reused materials is increasing.

This shift is driven by LCA calculations showing lower CO₂ emissions for reused materials, as well as national requirements for more gentle demolition, which increases the supply of materials suitable for reuse.

The reuse facility itself reflects these principles. The building is constructed from reused materials and designed by the architectural firm Slaatto Morsbøl, who specialize in circular construction. The collaboration began after an exhibition where the architects were awarded for their work with reused concrete.
