Pilot project pioneers circular construction

Focusing on demolition mapping and the reuse of building materials, Kalmar is leading one of the Future Baltic Bauhaus pilot projects that could become a model for sustainable and circular construction.

Addressing two key areas: mapping materials in buildings prior to demolition and establishing a physical and digital marketplace for reused building materials Kalmar, in collaboration with GodaHus, will launch a pilot project under the Future Baltic Bauhaus initiative. The project aims to develop practical solutions for reuse in the construction sector starting in autumn 2025. The overarching goal is to reduce construction and demolition waste, raise awareness among stakeholders, and support Kalmar’s climate neutrality ambitions.

Digital mapping supports material reuse

The demolition mapping work will involve testing digital tools to identify and document reusable materials at an early stage. In parallel, a business model for a materials hub and reuse marketplace will be developed to make reuse both accessible and economically viable. The potential for social entrepreneurship to strengthen local engagement is also being explored.

With a growing demand for second-hand materials but limited supporting infrastructure, this pilot represents a crucial step forward. If successful, Kalmar could become a frontrunner in circular building practices—setting an example for other municipalities seeking to reduce their environmental footprint.
